
Air India CEO Campbell Wilson Arrives at Plane Crash Site in Ahmedabad

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson of Air India paid a visit to the scene of the AI-171 plane crash in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
On June 12, 2025, the flight, which was traveling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, carried 169 Indians, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.
"The 12-year-old Boeing 787-8 aircraft departed from Ahmedabad at 1338 Hours, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew. The aircraft crashed shortly after take-off. We regret to inform you that, of the 242 aboard, there are 241 confirmed fatalities. The sole survivor is being treated in a hospital, Air India posted on X.
Shortly after taking off on Thursday, the passenger plane crashed into a resident physicians' hostel building close to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
According to reports, one individual miraculously escaped the fatal crash. The survivor was a British national of Indian descent.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu stated on Thursday that the Aircraft Accident probe Bureau (AAIB) has opened a formal probe into the fatal crash of Air India flight 171, which claimed the lives of 241 people on board.
First Officer Clive Kundar, who had 1,100 flying hours, supported Line Training Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who had 8,200 hours of flying experience, in piloting the aircraft.
The aircraft took off from Ahmedabad at 1339 IST (0809 UTC) from runway 23, according to Air Traffic Control (ATC). Despite making a Mayday call to ATC, the aircraft did not reply to ATC's subsequent contacts.
The plane hit the ground outside the airport's boundary as soon as it took off from Runway 23. According to an official, the accident scene was emitting a lot of black smoke.

The family of each person killed in the collision would receive Rs 1 crore in compensation, according to the Tata Group.
