Vaishnavi Srinivasagopalan, a talented Indian IT expert with experience in both India and the U.S., has been seeking employment opportunities in China.

Beijing's newly launched K-visa initiative aimed at science and technology professionals may make that aspiration a reality.

The K-visa introduced by Beijing last month forms part of China’s expanding initiative to keep pace with the U.S. in the competition for global talent and advanced technology.

It aligns with concerns regarding the H-1B program in the U.S. due to stricter immigration policies enacted by President Donald Trump.

“The K-visa for China is similar to the H-1B in the U.S.,” stated Srinivasagopalan, who finds China’s work environment and culture fascinating since her father was at a Chinese university a few years ago. “It is a great choice for individuals like myself to work overseas.”

The K-visa adds to China's current visa options, alongside the R-visa for foreign professionals, with more relaxed criteria, like not needing a job offer prior to application.

Tighter U.S. regulations on international students and scholars during Trump’s administration, such as increasing H-1B visa fees for foreign skilled workers to $100,000 for new applicants, are prompting some non-American professionals and students to explore other options.

“Those studying in the U.S. aimed for an (H-1B) visa, but at the moment this is a problem,” stated Bikash Kali Das, an Indian master's student in international relations at Sichuan University in China.

The governing Communist Party has prioritized achieving global leadership in advanced technologies, providing substantial government subsidies to back research and development in fields like artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and robotics.

“Beijing sees the U.S. immigration policy restrictions as a chance to establish itself internationally as a destination for foreign talent and investment,” remarked Barbara Kelemen, associate director and head of Asia at the security intelligence company Dragonfly.
