In an attempt to speed up the creation of large language models (LLMs) and new capabilities, Databricks intends to double its research and development (R&D) personnel in India by the end of this year.

Since establishing its R&D center in Bengaluru in 2023, the data lakehouse platform provider has employed about 100 engineers to assist the division.

According to Vinod Marur, senior vice president of engineering at Databricks, the India R&D team helps with infrastructure management for enterprise clients and helps build new features like the Lakeflow Connect and LLMs.

The global lack of AI skill sets and the abundance of technical expertise in India are the main reasons for hiring more engineers there.

The company's other research and development facilities are situated in Seattle, San Francisco, Belgrade, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Mountain View.

The company's $250 million investment in India over the next three years includes the development of the R&D team. Ed Lenta, SVP for Databricks Asia Pacific & Japan, ascribed this to the country's expanding client base, need for data modernization, and spread of generative AI.

Accordingly, the majority of the $250 million investment, according to Lenta, will be used to hire new employees, including R&D and more go-to-market and customer success specialists.

Databricks stated that it would add 250 employees by 50 percent in 2023, bringing its total number of employees to 375. It already employs roughly 500 people in India and has surpassed that milestone. By the end of the year, Lenta stated, Databricks intends to have 750 employees.
