DoorDash has launched its in-house drone delivery program, DoorDash Air, after securing certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate commercial drone deliveries across the United States.

The approval represents a major step forward for the food delivery platform as it expands into autonomous logistics and next-generation fulfillment technologies.

Through DoorDash Air, the company seeks to reduce its dependence on human couriers while significantly enhancing delivery speed, operational efficiency, and overall scalability. The initiative is part of DoorDash’s broader strategy to create a more agile and technology-driven logistics network.

By leveraging advanced drone capabilities, the company aims to streamline last-mile delivery and handle higher order volumes with greater precision.

This move also aligns with evolving consumer expectations for faster, more reliable, and convenient delivery experiences, positioning DoorDash to stay competitive in an increasingly innovation-focused and efficiency-driven delivery market.

The drone program has been developed by DoorDash Labs, the company’s robotics and autonomy division. This unit focuses on building and testing advanced delivery solutions, including aerial and ground-based automation. According to reports, DoorDash plans to integrate drone delivery directly into its core app, allowing users to select drone service as a delivery option where available.

DoorDash also confirmed that it is developing its own aircraft and supporting drone infrastructure, though it has not disclosed a timeline for full-scale commercial rollout.

This move places the company in direct competition with other major players in the drone delivery sector, such as Amazon’s Prime Air, Alphabet-owned Wing, and Zipline, all of which have been steadily expanding their commercial operations.

Despite building its own capabilities, DoorDash will continue collaborating with existing drone partners, including Wing and Flytrex. The company already operates a multi-modal delivery ecosystem that combines human couriers, its Dot sidewalk robots, and autonomous delivery partners. With the addition of drones, DoorDash aims to strengthen last-mile logistics, enhance delivery flexibility, and maintain a competitive edge in the rapidly evolving delivery market.
