EMA and FDA Release Collaborative AI Guidelines for Pharma Developers

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have released a collaborative list of principles for responsible artificial intelligence (AI) practices related to drug development. Important aspects of the principles involve adopting a risk-based total product lifecycle strategy and complying with revised AI standards.

On January 14, the FDA and EMA outlined 10 guiding principles that pharmaceutical sponsors should take into account when utilizing AI in their product development. The regulators observed that the application of AI technology during the product lifecycle has risen considerably in recent years and may be advantageous if utilized correctly.

Regulators stated that AI technologies are expected to facilitate a diverse strategy that encourages innovation, shortens time-to-market, enhances regulatory quality and pharmacovigilance, and lessens dependence on animal testing by advancing predictions of toxicity and efficacy in humans.

This document presents a unified framework of principles to guide, improve, and encourage the application of AI for producing evidence throughout every stage of the drug product life cycle.

The 10 guiding principles highlight areas where international regulators, standards organizations, and collaborative bodies can enhance best practices in drug development, “according to reports.

Collaboration areas encompass research, development of educational tools and resources, international alignment, and consensus standards, potentially aiding in the formulation of regulatory policies and guidelines across various jurisdictions, adhering to relevant legal and regulatory frameworks.

Joe Franklin, special counsel at Covington & Burling, remarked that the document helps producers assess the application of AI technology.

“The latest report validates the anticipated benefits of AI in pharmaceutical development and emphasizes several AI integration elements that firms are adopting in their AI governance,” he stated to Focus.

The core principles include ensuring that AI is created with ethical and human-focused values; utilizes a risk-based approach that addresses validation, risk minimization, and oversight based on the context of use; and adheres to relevant legal, scientific, regulatory, and other standards.

 

They also entail ensuring that the technology is utilized in a unique context and developed with contributions from different areas of expertise.

"Regulators emphasized that as AI implementation in drug development advances, effective practices and agreed-upon standards need to develop too." "Strong partnerships with international public health organizations will be crucial for stakeholders to advocate for responsible advancements in this area."
