
European Union Negotiators in Delhi for India-EU FTA Talks

This week, leaders of India and the European Union will conduct another round of important negotiations aimed at resolving disagreements regarding rules of origin, market access, and tariffs on wine and dairy products.
According to reports, two senior EU negotiators responsible for trade and agriculture matters will visit India this week to finalize the comprehensive free trade agreement soon. This visit follows recent discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and EU leaders about reaching an "early conclusion" for the India-EU FTA.
Christophe Hansen, the European Commission's agriculture commissioner, and Maros Sefcovic, the trade chief, will travel to India for discussions with their Indian counterparts as both parties work toward finalizing the FTA before year-end. These two Commissioners, holding positions comparable to Cabinet Ministers, will head a 30-person negotiating delegation from Brussels and will meet with their Indian equivalents in Delhi, including Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Prior to this significant visit, the 13th round of FTA discussions will commence on September 8th. While New Delhi will host the 13th negotiation round, Brussels is scheduled to host the following round in early next month.
Reports indicate that these meetings will address more complex matters including non-tariff barriers, market access, and public procurement issues.
This trade agreement gains importance during the uncertainty caused by US administration tariff policies. The deal also holds significance as it comes after the announcement of the EU-US agreement. The EU has shown willingness to provide flexibility to the US regarding the disputed Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism.
India's largest trade partner is the European Union, with goods trade between the two reaching $135 billion during the 2023-24 financial year.
On September 4th, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, where they talked about reaching a swift finalization of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.

According to reports, both parties have already finished negotiations on 11 sections, which encompassed areas such as customs and trade facilitation, dispute resolution, digital commerce, sustainable food systems, small and medium enterprises, competition and subsidies, and capital flows.
In addition to the trade agreement, India and the European Union are working to establish several groundbreaking initiatives, including a fresh political-strategic outlook and essential foundational structures to strengthen defense cooperation. These developments have emerged amid growing geopolitical instability.
