In the fiscal year 2026, Hero MotoCorp has substantially regained its dominance in the competitive landscape for leadership in the two-wheeler sector within the country, markedly favoring its position over Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India. This resurgence comes after a year where Honda had significantly closed the competitive gap.
Hero managed to sell 6.07 million units during the year, surpassing Honda’s 5.75 million units. This achievement widened their lead by over 310,000 units, thereby reaffirming its command in a rivalry that has progressively evolved into a contest of changing momentum. The context accentuates the remarkable nature of the recent shift.

As late as fiscal year 2024, Hero boasted a substantial advantage, surpassing Honda in sales by approximately 890,000 units. However, fiscal year 2025 witnessed a significant shift in competitive dynamics, with Honda experiencing a remarkable uptick, primarily driven by its robust scooter lineup, reducing the sales differential to a mere 280,000 units. This development suggested the potential for a leadership transition, given Honda's accelerated market penetration contrasted with Hero's comparatively slower expansion.
Hero's market expansion was 8.1 percent, slightly surpassing Honda’s eight percent, but critically, this growth occurred from a larger foundational base, enabling Hero to reestablish its lead. This transformation was not solely about incremental growth but also about the origins of that expansion.
Hero's resurgence was deeply rooted in sectors where it has traditionally been strong while simultaneously gaining momentum in emerging markets that Honda has not yet fully capitalized on. A significant distinction has emerged in the electric vehicle sector.
Hero's Vida electric scooter lineup achieved approximately 150,000 units in fiscal year 2026, establishing a significant foothold in a market that grew to 1.4 million units, up from 1.2 million in the previous year. In contrast, Honda continued to hold a minor position despite introducing models like the Activa e and QC1, with their volumes remaining below 10,000 units. This disparity in the electric vehicle segment resulted in additional volumes for Hero at a moment when this segment is starting to impact overall market rankings.
