IIT Kharagpur Inks MoU With TEC for Telecom Research, Innovation

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has entered into a formal agreement with the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) to work together on research, standardization, and innovation in the field of telecommunications.

IIT Kharagpur stated that the objective of the agreement is to synchronize academic research efforts with the strategic goals of the nation in the fields of telecommunications and information and communication technology (ICT).

The Memorandum of Understanding was recently executed by Kamal Kr Agarwal, Deputy Director General (Finance & Administration) at TEC, and Debdeep Mukhopadhyay, Associate Dean (Research & Development) at IIT Kharagpur, in the presence of Prof Suman Chakraborty, Director at IIT Kharagpur, and additional high-ranking officials.

The two organizations have entered into a partnership to collaborate on the advancement of standards, performing research, and making contributions to the advancement of next-generation telecommunications technologies such as 5G and upcoming network systems.

The Telecommunications Engineering Center (TEC) serves as the primary agency responsible for establishing and maintaining telecom standards in India. TEC's primary function involves the development of technical specifications and testing protocols for telecommunications products and services.

TEC serves as the representative of India at various international forums, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), particularly in the areas of standardization and radiocommunication.

The representative expressed that the partnership will emphasize advanced antenna systems and Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) technologies in order to bolster 5G and forthcoming wireless networks.

 

The two parties will collaborate on Passive Optical Network (PON) technologies, focusing on the standardization of network design, enhancement of deployment methods, and assessment of performance.

One other vital aspect to consider is the monitoring of electromagnetic fields (EMF) and implementing intelligent Internet of Things (IoT) solutions. This will involve the creation of monitoring systems and sensor platforms utilizing artificial intelligence to enhance safety protocols and ensure adherence to regulations.

Chakraborty mentioned that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) permits both establishments to investigate additional developing sectors in the telecommunications industry that align with the country's strategic objectives.

He stated that the collaboration is anticipated to enhance India's involvement in international telecommunications standardization endeavors, as well as advance research-driven innovation and autonomy in communication technologies.
