India and US Nuclear Regulators Convene to Enhance Collaboration

India's Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) announced that it conducted a bilateral technical meeting with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to enhance collaboration on nuclear safety and regulation as India aims to grow its nuclear power capacity. A delegation from India took part in the meeting conducted from August 6 to 8 at the NRC headquarters in Rockville, Maryland, the AERB stated in a statement from August 12.
The meeting occurs as India aims to increase its nuclear power generation capacity to a minimum of 100 gigawatts by 2047, up from just above 8 gigawatts at present.
The AERB stated that the nations talked about the regulation of novel and sophisticated reactors, along with codes and standards for advanced reactor technologies, among other topics. It was stated that both parties recognized possible avenues for collaboration in the future.
In April, Reuters announced that India was easing regulations to permit foreign entities to possess minority interests in nuclear power initiatives.
India's nuclear energy production of slightly more than 8 gigawatts represents approximately 3% of its overall installed electricity capacity.
The statement indicated that India and the United States also talked about strategies for the long-term operation of nuclear power plants, safety evaluations, and emergency readiness for advanced and small modular reactors.
