India Bans Import of Jute, Other Items Amid Strained Bangladesh Ties

Separator

imgCiting tense relations between the two nations, India announced a ban on the import of specific jute goods and woven fabrics through all land routes, further tightening economic restrictions on Bangladesh.

The contentious remarks made in China by Muhammad Yunus, the leader of Bangladesh's interim administration, prompted the announcement of these actions.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has issued a new rule that restricts imports to the seaport of Nhava Sheva in Maharashtra.

Jute products, flax waste and tow, jute and other bast fibers, jute, single flax yarn, single jute yarn, numerous folded, woven fabrics or flex, and unbleached woven fabrics of jute are among the items covered by these limits.

This significantly disrupts cross-border trade by essentially closing all land border crossings for these particular items.

Bangladeshi goods traveling through India to Nepal and Bhutan will not be subject to these port restrictions.

The DGFT added that these goods cannot be reexported from Bangladesh to India via Nepal or Bhutan.

The most recent prohibition is not a unique instance.

Similar restrictions on imports from Bangladesh were issued by India earlier in April and May.

India placed port limits on the entry of some products from the neighboring nation, such as processed foods and ready-made clothing, on May 17.

The transhipment facility that India had given Bangladesh to export a range of goods to the Middle East, Europe, and other nations—aside from Nepal and Bhutan—was revoked on April 9.

Following Yunus' remarks that infuriated New Delhi, the new sanctions were announced.  In India, they also provoked strong responses from political figures from all parties.
