A senior official from the Ministry of External Affairs stated that the India-U.S. relationship has endured many transitions and challenges, and the bilateral ties will progress, referencing comments from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding India's acquisition of military equipment and energy from Russia and the announcement of 25 percent tariffs on Indian imports, along with a penalty.

India and the United States have a broad global strategic partnership based on mutual interests, democratic principles, and strong interpersonal connections. This collaboration has endured numerous changes and obstacles. "We stay committed to the core agenda that our nations have agreed upon and are assured that the partnership will keep progressing," stated Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, at the weekly press briefing on Friday.

The India-U.S. relationship has progressed significantly over time and expressed assurance that it will navigate the current challenges similarly to how India managed the sanctions and technology restrictions that the U.S. implemented following India's nuclear weapons tests in May 1998.

Earlier on Wednesday (July 30, 2025), President Trump framed the trade relationship amid his continued attempts to engage Russia in discussions over the Ukraine issue and stated on the social media site TruthSocial, “Keep in mind, though India is our ally, we have, throughout the years, conducted relatively minimal business with them since their tariffs are excessively high, among the highest globally, and they impose the most severe and unpleasant non-monetary trade restrictions of any nation.

They have consistently procured most of their military assets from Russia and are the largest buyer of energy from Russia, together with China.

In addition to focusing on India for energy sourcing and acquiring military equipment from Russia, President Trump criticized the BRICS alliance, which includes India and Russia as founding members.

“They have BRICS, essentially a coalition of nations that oppose the United States, and India is part of it.” “If you can take it seriously,” Mr. Trump remarked to reporters at the White House .
