India-US Deal: Minerals Ministerial Boosts Supply Chains

The US will be hosting the first Critical Minerals Ministerial at the State Department, led by Marco Rubio, will bring together delegations from more than 50 countries to enhance collaboration in ensuring the security and diversification of global critical mineral supply chains

The ministerial meeting occurs during a period of increased India-US collaboration in various areas including trade, energy, and strategic relations.

The Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, is scheduled to participate in a meeting in the US, preceding which he will engage in a one-on-one discussion with Secretary Rubio.

According to the US State Department, the upcoming three-day conference will center on strengthening strategic supply chains for minerals that are crucial for technological advancement, economic stability, and national defense. The department states that this significant assembly will generate impetus for cooperation in ensuring the essential components necessary for technological advancement, economic prosperity, and national defense.

Simultaneously, US President Donald Trump revealed a trade agreement with India after a prolonged period of trade disputes, specifically related to tariffs. These tensions arose after the imposition of 50 percent duties on Indian products by Washington in August 2025, in which a portion of the tariffs were connected to India's procurement of crude oil from Russia.

Confirming the agreement, PM Narendra Modi posted on X, "Wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today.

Trump, in his Truth Social post, said, "It was an Honor to speak with Prime Minister Modi, of India, this morning. He is one of my greatest friends and, a Powerful and Respected Leader of his Country. We spoke about many things, including Trade, and ending the War with Russia and Ukraine. He agreed to stop buying Russian Oil, and to buy much more from the US and, potentially, Venezuela. This will help END THE WAR in Ukraine, which is taking place right now, with thousands of people dying each and every week!”.

In light of this context, Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar is currently in the US from February 2-4 to take part in the Critical Minerals Ministerial, which will focus on enhancing supply chain resilience, advancing clean energy transitions, and fostering strategic collaboration related to critical minerals.

 

During his visit, Jaishankar will also plan to engage in discussions with high-ranking officials of the US government.

Before the ministerial meeting, the US State Department indicated that it would assemble partners from various countries to enhance collaboration on essential mineral supply chains. This cooperation was emphasized as crucial to America's economic and national security, technological advancement, and transition to renewable energy sources.

At the beginning of the month, there were simultaneous initiatives focused on securing mineral networks. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent organized a Finance Ministerial in Washington to investigate methods of enhancing and broadening important mineral supply chains, particularly rare-earth elements.

The gathering convened high-ranking representatives from various countries such as Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and the UK, with the delegation from India led by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
