IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers Resigns

IndiGo's CEO Pieter Elbers has stepped down, and Managing Director Rahul Bhatia has been named interim head of the company's management, the airline stated in a regulatory filing today.

Elbers' departure occurs almost three months after the airline experienced significant flight disruptions that stranded at least three hundred thousand passengers.

Ultimately, the aviation authority DGCA levied fines amounting to Rs 22.20 crore on IndiGo, alongside additional measures.

"We would like to notify you that during its meeting today, March 10, 2026," the Company's Board of Directors, among other matters, acknowledged the resignation submitted by Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer. He will be released from the Company's service effective at the end of business hours on March 10, 2026. IndiGo stated in the filing that Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director, will temporarily take charge of the Company's affairs.

IndiGo is the largest, fastest-growing, and most prominent low-cost airline in India, holding a 64.2percent share of the domestic market as of August 2025.

Established in 2005 by Rahul Bhatia and Rakesh Gangwal, it commenced operations in 2006, recognized for its timely, cost-effective, and, as of late 2024, hybrid service model featuring "IndiGo Stretch" business-class seating.

Operating a fleet of more than 430 aircraft (mainly Airbus A320 and A321 Neo) and utilizing a strategy for quick turnarounds of 25 minutes, it conducts over 2,700 flights each day to over 140 destinations (including 45+ international).

In addition to its basic beginnings, it provides services such as "6E Prime" for priority, and has started adding business-class seats on chosen routes to meet the needs of high-demand, major cities.
