Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has designated insider Vishal Shah to an important role related to artificial intelligence, overseeing product management for AI offerings, the social media giant announced.

The action highlights Big Tech's emphasis on the rapidly growing technology, channeling resources and skilled individuals into AI advancement. Meta competes with Microsoft and startups like OpenAI and Anthropic to develop the most advanced AI models.

Shah led product management for Instagram at Meta for more than six years, prior to taking on the role of vice president of Metaverse — the firm's vision for a three-dimensional virtual environment — in 2021.

The Financial Times first reported the development earlier on Monday, referencing an internal memo. Shah will be reporting to Meta's AI product chief, Nat Friedman, as stated in the report.

A representative from Meta verified Shah's new position but chose not to provide further details about the appointment when reached by Reuters.
