Meta Platforms Acquires WaveForms AI
Meta Platforms has bought WaveForms AI, a startup that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to comprehend and mimic emotion in audio. Alexis Conneau, who earlier focused on audio research at Meta and OpenAI, and Coralie Lemaitre, a past ad strategist at Google, established the company.
Launched in December 2024, WaveForms AI had previously disclosed securing $40 million in funding from a round spearheaded by Andreessen Horowitz.
The initiative is part of Meta’s extensive effort to enhance its skills in AI-driven audio. The firm has recently brought on Johan Schalkwyk, an ex-Google Fellow recognized for his contributions to speech AI. Schalkwyk has become a Voice Lead at Superintelligence Labs, as stated on his LinkedIn profile.
Last month, Meta purchased Play AI, a company that focuses on developing lifelike voices.

Meta has increased its emphasis on AI, recruiting experts from top firms like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. In the past few months, the company has hired various notable individuals, such as Daniel Gross, founder of the AI startup Safe Superintelligence, Ruoming Pang, who led Apple’s Foundation Models team, and Nat Friedman, the former CEO of GitHub.
The purchase is anticipated to strengthen Meta's enduring vision for interactive AI.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated during his earnings call in April, "We're going to have all the AI we discussed all day." This is also connected to the reasons for postponing the release of its large language model (LLM) 'LLaMA 4' earlier this year.

At that moment, Meta expressed worries that Lamar4's voice interaction features were not as advanced as those of open AI models, prompting it to accelerate its initiatives to acquire voice research expertise and technology for enhancement.
