Nirmala Sitharaman Meets Singapore Leaders to Boost Bilateral Ties

Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Friday to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation, expanding investment opportunities, and advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between India and Singapore.
Sitharaman met President Tharman at The Istana in Singapore during her three-day official visit from October 9 to 11. According to the Finance Ministry, the meeting provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on advancing the bilateral partnership and deepening collaboration across key areas of mutual interest.
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong also held discussions with Sitharaman, focusing on global economic developments and the ongoing energy crisis. In a post on social media platform X, Wong described the discussions as productive and said the minister shared updates on India's progress and emerging opportunities for investment and cooperation.
The meetings come as India and Singapore continue to strengthen economic engagement, with investment, trade, and strategic cooperation remaining important areas of their relationship.
During her visit, Sitharaman also met Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan to discuss opportunities for greater economic collaboration between the two countries.

Balakrishnan highlighted the investment potential available to Singaporean businesses in India, noting the opportunities associated with the country's future economic growth. He also wished Sitharaman a successful visit to Singapore in a social media post following their meeting.

Singapore remains India's largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI). Cumulative FDI inflows from Singapore reached approximately $194.68 billion between April 2000 and March 2026, according to the figures cited in the report.
Singapore-based institutional investors, including GIC and Temasek, also maintain substantial investments across various sectors of the Indian economy.

Sitharaman's visit is expected to provide further opportunities to strengthen financial and economic ties, encourage cross-border investments, and identify new areas of cooperation.
