Operation Sindoor: Airport Security Rises to the Highest Level

ImgSecurity at all the Indian airports is said to be increased to the highest level considering the escalating tensions with Pakistan. The aviation security regulator has begun ordering secondary pre-boarding checks for all passengers and flights, banning entry of visitors at airport terminals, and deploying required number of air marshals in light of increased threat perception, among several other measures. These measures are expected to remain in effect until at least May 18th.

The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has mandated rigorous secondary checks for passengers and their cabin bags before boarding their flight. Random baggage inspections, stricter passengers and staff ID verification, intense surveillance of airport ground staff, comprehensive aircraft and catering security checks, along with ensuring proper functioning of all CCTV cameras have been ordered. The State police and Special Forces are expected to enhance perimeter security.

Additionally, there is said to strict on-ground monitoring of operations of microlite aircraft, aero models, para gliders, unmanned aerial systems, and drones; deployment of additional security guards at aircraft, and thorough scrutiny of PNR, passenger and cargo.

The BCAS order stated, “In view of the recent attack in Pahalgam and subsequent surcharged security scenario, it is necessary to enhance security measures at all civil aviation installations like airports, airstrips, airfields, air force stations, helipads, flying schools, aviation training institutes, etc. so that no untoward incident takes place in the country. Accordingly, utmost precautions need to be taken by all stake holders.”

In correspondence to the BCAS order, airlines have reportedly issued a travel advisory to passengers, asking them to arrive at airports at least three hours prior to the scheduled departure. Several flights in the areas close to the India-Pakistan border or housed at key Indian Air Force bases have been cancelled. However, they are expected to be fully operational for defense flights.
