PM Modi and Canada PM Mark Carney to Reset Ties

In an effort to enhance relations between their respective countries, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart, Mark Carney, are scheduled to convene in New Delhi. This meeting is regarded as a strategic move to renew diplomatic relations between India and Canada.
Upon his arrival in New Delhi, Carney is anticipated to finalize a decade-long uranium supply agreement worth $2 billion, along with several additional smaller agreements covering topics like oil and gas, environmental issues, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, education, and culture.

Carney arrived in the country's capital following a two-day stint in Mumbai during which he held meetings with various industry figures. Upon landing in New Delhi, he was greeted at the airport by Union Minister of State for Commerce, Jitin Prasada, on Sunday.
Modi and Carney are scheduled to convene at the Hyderabad House in the nation's capital. They will examine the advancements made thus far within various facets of the India-Canada Strategic Partnership, expanding upon their prior gatherings in Kananaskis, Canada in June 2025, and Johannesburg, South Africa in November 2025.
The two leaders had previously convened during the G7 summit in June 2025. Carney's arrival in India marks the commencement of a visit aimed at revitalizing diplomatic relations and increasing trade, in an effort to mend the strained ties resulting from his country's deteriorating relationship with the US.
Carney's visit marks a significant advancement in relations that deteriorated drastically in 2023 following allegations from Ottawa that New Delhi was behind a violent campaign targeting Sikh activists in Canada. India is aiming to enhance its foreign investment appeal and has noted that Canadian pension and wealth funds have already allocated a substantial sum of $73 billion into the country, as reported by news agencies.

India has consistently denied the accusations, resulting in a sharp decline in diplomatic relations, leading to the expulsion of several high-ranking diplomats from both countries in 2024. Relations have seen an enhancement following Carney assuming office in March 2025, leading to the reinstatement of diplomatic representatives.
In Mumbai, Carney had a meeting with Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran to explore potential collaborations between India and Canada in diverse fields such as technology and artificial intelligence.
Carney's visit underscored the importance of strengthening connections between individuals and fostering innovation. Carney faces a dual challenge: to foster economic collaboration and to simultaneously avoid allowing lingering security conflicts to interfere with the overall improvement of the Canada-India relationship.

Enhanced relations with India are in line with Carney's comprehensive foreign policy perspective, as outlined in Davos, emphasizing the need for middle powers to collaborate more closely in addressing disruptions in the global order. India being part of a larger Indo-Pacific tour with Australia and Japan highlights the fact that this involvement forms part of a more extensive strategic realignment.
