Qualcomm has entered a multi-year contract with SpaceX to provide radio equipment, baseband units, and software for Starlink Mobile’s intended nationwide terrestrial 5G network, as the Elon Musk-led aerospace firm aims to compete with established US wireless providers.

Qualcomm announced on Wednesday that the equipment will be launched at tens of thousands of macro cell sites nationwide beginning in 2027. Although the company did not reveal the financial details of the contract, it stated, "this represents our largest 5G agreement to date."

The agreement will enhance Qualcomm's presence, renowned for its smartphone chips, in the telecom infrastructure sector, allowing it to rival Marvell, Broadcom, and Intel by providing chips utilized in cell tower equipment.

Qualcomm, aiming to broaden its reach beyond mobile devices, currently supports 5G networks in Japan and Vietnam.

SpaceX intends to create a significant national wireless provider in the US, challenging established players AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile by integrating satellite connectivity with a ground-based network.
