Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar Gets One-Year Extension in Tenure

The term of Satish Kumar as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Board has been prolonged by one additional year.

His tenure was originally set to conclude on August 31, 2025.

"On August 27, 2025, a government order confirmed that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has sanctioned the renewal of Satish Kumar's tenure as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Board for another year beginning September 1, 2025, on a contract basis with the same terms and conditions or until further notice, whichever comes first."

Kumar's initial appointment on September 1, 2024, marked a historic moment as he became the first chairman and CEO from the scheduled castes category in the Board's history.

According to officials, Kumar, a distinguished member of the 1986 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), has made notable contributions to Indian Railways over his impressive career spanning more than 34 years.

"He started his journey with Indian Railways in March 1988 and has since held numerous key roles across various zones and divisions, introducing innovations, enhancing efficiency, and improving safety within the railway system," they noted.

He has worked in several divisions, zones, and production units, which include the Jhansi Division of the former Central Railway, the Diesel Locomotive Works in Varanasi, North Eastern Railway, Patiala Locomotive Works, the Lucknow Division of Northern Railway, the Jaipur Division of North Western Railway, and North Central Railway in various roles.

"One of Kumar's major achievements is his development of the Fog Safe Device, a noteworthy innovation that has been crucial in ensuring safe train operations in foggy weather," officials remarked.

Prior to his role as Chairman and CEO, Kumar also held the position of Member, Traction and Rolling Stock (MTRS), which is a vital post responsible for overseeing important elements of traction and rolling stock throughout Indian Railways.
