Tamil Nadu Pitches itself as Defense Manufacturing Hub

The Tamil Nadu government has intensified efforts to establish the State as a significant aerospace and defense (A&D) manufacturing center, extending its promotional campaign to businesses in different cities to highlight the opportunities arising from India’s fast-growing defence industry.
During an industry event held by the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor (TNDIC) in Madurai, representatives from the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) announced that India's defence production surpassed Rs.1.54 lakh crore in the previous year, and exports went beyond Rs.38,000 crore.

With the Centre aiming for Rs.3 lakh crore in defence production and Rs.50,000 crore in exports by 2029, Tamil Nadu is working to secure a substantial portion of investments and manufacturing operations.
The authorities emphasized multi-billion-dollar prospects within significant defence and aerospace initiatives, such as Future Ready Combat Vehicles, Future Infantry Combat Vehicles, Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, Medium Role Fighter Aircraft, submarines, maintenance, repair and overhaul, propellants, and the space industry.
They stated that these programs provide significant opportunities for MSMEs and large manufacturers in Tamil Nadu to integrate into both domestic and global supply chains. The State is promoting businesses to utilize programs like Innovations for Defence Excellence, the Technology Development Fund from DRDO, technology transfers from DRDO, the Srijan indigenisation portal, and the expanding export market for Indian defence products.

To assist companies entering the industry, the State has implemented various measures under the Tamil Nadu Aerospace and Defence Industrial Policy, such as increased capital subsidies, certification assistance, vendor development initiatives, shared facility centers, and testing infrastructure. It has teamed up with IIT Madras and DRDO to enhance access to technology.
Tamil Nadu is allocating resources towards specialized infrastructure via the Defence Industrial Corridor, which encompasses aerospace and defence parks, engineering and innovation hubs, shared testing facilities, and Centres of Excellence for advanced manufacturing, aiming to lower entry barriers for MSMEs and startups.
The outreach initiative in Madurai is one of several consultations taking place in Coimbatore, Hosur, Tiruchi, Chennai, and Madurai leading up to the National Departmental Summit on Atmanirbharata in Defence Manufacturing – Promoting State Ecosystems, set to occur in New Delhi on August 20 and 21.
The summit seeks to enhance defence and aerospace ecosystems at the State and Union Territory levels, ensure they align with national indigenisation objectives, and develop action plans tailored to each State.
