Tata Steel Inaugurates First Scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace

Tata Steel unveiled its new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) facility at Hi-Tech Valley in Ludhiana, emphasizing a significant achievement in the organization's progression towards environmentally conscious steel production.

The manufacturing facility will be dedicated to producing high-quality construction steel rebar under Tata Steel's prominent retail brand 'Tata Tiscon', allowing Tata Steel to enhance its market presence in the construction sector.

Given India's increasing shift towards a climate-resilient future, sustainability has emerged as a crucial national priority that necessitates immediate and collaborative action.

According to N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Steel, the Ludhiana Electric Arc Furnace exemplifies Tata Group's enduring commitment to developing a more environmentally friendly and resilient industrial landscape.

Bhagwant Singh Mann, Chief Minister of Punjab and N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Steel, attended the ceremony along with T V Narendran, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Steel and other senior government officials and Company representatives. Designed to support low-carbon steelmaking, the plant will use nearly 50 percent renewable energy. 

"The state-of-the-art facility will use 100 per cent steel scrap as raw material, sourcing 40 per cent scrap from the Company's steel recycling plant in Rohtak, Haryana."

 

The plant would produce construction-grade steel rebar under the Company's flagship retail brand 'Tata Tiscon', which would enable Tata Steel to further augment its market presence in the construction segment.

The Ludhiana EAF represents a significant step in Tata Steel's journey towards achieving Net Zero emissions by 2045, showcasing the company's approach to capital investment for a circular economy that prioritizes technologies capable of minimizing resource consumption while maintaining global competitiveness.

T V Narendran, CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel, expressed gratitude towards the Government of Punjab for its ongoing support and collaboration, emphasizing the company's dedication to generating lasting benefits for local communities.

Over the previous three years, the Company has collaborated with nearby communities through the Tata Steel Foundation to facilitate positive transformation in Ludhiana, focusing on key areas such as health, education, agriculture, and women's empowerment.

The outcomes of this partnership have been significant, including providing training opportunities for students at local Industrial Training Institutes (ITI), creating new sources of income for women, implementing solar-powered streetlights, promoting environmentally sustainable agricultural techniques, establishing community-led waste management systems, integrating ecological concepts into school curricula and facilities, and offering scholarships to talented students.
