US State Department Strengthens Ties with India, Despite Democracy Concerns

Separator

The United States Department of State came under scrutiny as spokesperson Matthew Miller addressed recent allegations of democratic regression in India and the shifting dynamics of the US-India relationship. In a press briefing, Miller reiterated America’s dedication to its strategic alliance with India, highlighting the nation's crucial position on the world stage. “India, as the world’s largest democracy, remains an essential strategic partner of the United States, and we anticipate this partnership to endure”, stated Miller during the daily press briefing.

Against a backdrop of mounting apprehensions regarding democratic principles and the rule of law in India, notably underscored by the recent detention of Indian opposition figure Arvind Kejriwal, Miller encountered inquiries regarding the US State Department’s position on Kejriwal’s arrest vis-à-vis analogous incidents in Pakistan. Miller chose not to juxtapose the two cases, stressing instead the US's dedication to maintaining uniform standards of rule of law and human rights worldwide, a commitment extended even to Pakistan.

The detention of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on accusations of money laundering related to the Delhi excise policy case has sparked considerable interest, eliciting reactions from US authorities. Addressing India's summoning of a US diplomat regarding remarks on Kejriwal's arrest and the freezing of Congress party bank accounts, Miller reiterated the US's vigilance over these unfolding events.

“We continue to closely monitor these developments, including the arrest of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. Additionally, we are aware of the Congress party’s allegations regarding the freezing of their bank accounts, which may impact their electoral campaign”, affirmed Miller.

Emphasizing the importance of fair, transparent, and timely legal processes in addressing these issues, Miller reiterated the US’s commitment to supporting democratic principles globally. In response to the US State Department’s remarks, the Ministry of External Affairs of India denounced any external interference in its electoral and legal processes, asserting the robustness and independence of its democratic institutions.

Amid increasing scrutiny and ongoing diplomatic dialogues, the shifting dynamics between the US and India highlight the intricacies of sustaining a strategic alliance amid obstacles to democratic governance.
