During the pandemic, the e-Commerce was one of the worst hit sectors as from essentials to non-essentials, every service was bared for over a month. With the permission to start with essential items only, the government now has given permission to the e-Commerce companies to sell non-essential items only in the green zones. According to a report by Unicommerce, the Indian e-Commerce industry regained 30 percent of pre-lockdown order volume in the last one week.

In its sector wise analysis report, Unicommerce highlights that the electronic appliances witnessed the major jump with 35 percent pre-lockdown order volume, followed by fashion (around 30 percent), while the online eyewear operating under essential category is still waiting to find its lost ground. Online cosmetic recovered just 15-20 percent while e-pharma and online grocery sector is witnessing sustained growth. Kapil Makhija, CEO, Unicommerce, says,

“The last 40 days had a major impact and change in people’s mindset when it came to online shopping. Even though the government has permitted certain activities, consumers are still wary of leaving the house and have adopted social distancing as a way of life. The essentials category has witnessed a major surge during the 40 day lockdown and will continue to see an increase in the overall demand. With certain relaxation in the non-essential sale in the green and orange zones, we are witnessing a similar growth in the other sectors. e-Commerce industry is expected to see a steep increase in orders in the long run as the consumers would adjust to the new norms post the lockdown.”

With the government taking new measures and providing various packages for the businesses, and the consumers waiting for revenge shopping, the e-Commerce market will soon have their sunny days. As the red zones will turn orange and then green, the number of orders will pick up pace from across segments though electronics and fashion will top the chart. And with the government permitting home delivery of alcohol, a new segment for e-Commerce companies might open up in the coming days. Let’s wait and watch!
