What inspired you to venture into the Nephrology segment?
Taking on new challenges and learning new things have always encouraged me to progress in life. As a result, while working for the government, I began my training in nephrology in 1985. I had the choice of moving into the super specialty sector, but I opted to become a nephrologist because it was an emerging subject, and there were only a handful of people going for Nephrology in our state and country. As a result, I became Bengal's first qualified Nephrologist. Back then many individuals were suffering from Kidney ailments & however owing to the absence of effective physicians in the state, the patients could not receive good & early treatment. All of these events drove me to become the person I am today. After which, there was no turning back; in 1998, I founded the Department of Nephrology at IPGME&R in Kolkata and launched the DM Nephrology program, the first nephrology training program in Eastern India. I have successfully conducted over 2000 kidney transplants since commencing my career in nephrology.

Define Medica Superspecialty Hospital as an organisation and how is it different from other Nephrology hospitals present in the country
Medica, unlike other Nephrology hospitals, is a private teaching hospital. Medica has all of the resources essential to educate a doctor on a daily basis. I oversaw the education program when I first joined Medica, which intended to improve the quality and perfection of medical treatment as well as patient care. Medica encouraged me to launch training programs in many specialties. Having said that, Medica is an organisation in which doctors perform their duties and participate in numerous educational programs to better themselves, hence enhancing the quality of patient care.

Medica Nephrology also provides cutting-edge dialysis such as low flux dialysis membrane, high flux dialysis membrane, and online hemodiafiltration (OL-HDF), which is now a routinely recommended therapeutic modality for patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD). Further, Medica provides CRRT (a type of blood purification therapy used with AKI patients that involves passing a patient's blood through a specialised filter that removes fluid and uremic toxins, returning clean blood to the body). Dialysis is performed at Medica Hospital in 10 distinct sites, including all critical care sections. Medica also does kidney biopsies inhouse, has proprietary nephrology USG Dopplers, and performs interventional nephrology. Further, the DNB nephrology training program is currently underway in Medica, and we are pleased to say that all of our prior trainees have passed.

Share about the facilities you offer at Medica Superspecialty Hospital. What are the recent tools and technologies you are using to treat patients more effectively?
My area of expertise at Medica includes Chronic Renal Disease(CKD), Acute Kidney Disease, Hemodialysis Treatment, Peritoneal Dialysis, Kidney Transplantation, Kidney Transplantation, and many other types of Kidney-related disorders.
At Medica, we leverage several tools and technologies to treat patients, including a modern stone management facility to manage Urinary Stone Disease, a state-of-the-art facility to manage this common disease affecting the elderly population, ultramodern laser treatment for prostate (HOLEP) in conjunction with conventional microsurgery like TURP, Saline TURP (PlasmaKinetic Resection), and non- invasive extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy. This technique powders the stone into sand-like particles that are rinsed away, Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy is a minimally invasive method for removing kidney stones by establishing a keyhole tract from the kidney to the stone, Endoscopic technique to break and remove ureteric stones by applying energy sources like pneumatic lithotripsy and laser lithotripsy, and Facility for advanced reconstructive urology involving urological diseases like Stricture Urethra, Hypospadias, Epispadius, Genito-Urinary Fistula.

Going forward, what are the goals that you wish to invest in and how do you plan to take them further?
We must sustain the excellent standard of treatment and patient care that we have established. We were the first hospital in the country to import machinery and other equipment from Germany and is the country's first hospital to use cutting-edge technologies. We are the first to use the most advanced procedure for treating dialysis patients (Hemodialysis), and we are also the first to outfit our laboratory with all of the latest technology. Making a name for ourselves did not come without its challenges, and we are proud to have accomplished what we set out to do. Our purpose is to be a source of inspiration for aspiring practitioners.
