Audrey Hepburn once said, “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I’m possible”. One of the pioneering construction contractors in India and the first ISO certified company of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), Beigh Construction Company (BCC) Pvt. Ltd. is epitomizing these words and proving that impossibility has the potential of proving itself to be possible. Backed by Imran Beigh's (Managing Director) prudence, perseverance, diligence and spirit of achieving the unachievable, BCC accomplished the execution of the longest highway tunnel in Asia –‘Chenani-Nashri Tunnel’ with flying colours thereby engraving its excellence across the construction space of India. Kick-starting its journey with the tunnel construction project for Northern Railways in Banihal region of J&K and Chenani-Nashri, the firm is currently playing an instrumental role in the construction of prominent projects like Amravati Chikhli project, Zoji La Tunnel, Railway Tunnel T77D and many other proposals in tunnel construction.

With just a single boring machine and a few dozen construction workers entailing a small team of engineers, Imran uplifted BCC to its zenith by recruiting 1,300 people(95 percent locals)and expanding its fleet of small and big machines to 150 in a span of two years. No wonder BCC is reaping a turnover of around Rs.250 crores annually from its tailored projects, eminent for zero man-hour loss, high quality, safety, cost-effectiveness and remarkable turnaround times. Look into the following snippets of an exclusive conversation of Imran with CEO Insights wherein he elucidated about BCC’s craftsmanship in creating incredible yet highly functional projects of all time.

What were the most influential factors that triggered you to set up BCC?
Exploring the market scenario across J&K in 2012, I realized that a
plethora of infrastructure projects primarily under railway, highways, hydro and underground segments were booming each day. But the alarming fact was that all these projects were being outsourced to behemoths from different parts of the globe and not executed by local construction companies at J&K. This scenario in fact propelled me to come back to India post my education at Australia and join my family construction business to contribute my best for the welfare of J&K. Hence, I incorporated 'BCC' in 2012 knowing our capability in executing any kind of construction project and we gradually became the subcontractors for big companies at J&K.

" With visions of procuring more projects in the future, we are aligning ourselves to embark onto the hydro sector in construction"

How have been your experiences while working on the most important Chenani-Nashri Tunnel project of India?
We at BCC held huge reputation for performing exceptionally during the construction of our first major project – Banihal Railway Tunnel which paved way to the reallocation of the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel project to us in 2014 by Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services(IL&FS). This was chiefly because Leighton Contractor (India) failed to complete the entire project and accomplished just 48 percent of it. Post the project reallocation, IL&FS acknowledged our proficiency right from the first contract of excavation to lining and eventually bestowed us the stark responsibility of completing it as we surpassed the progress of Leighton at every stage. Within three days of taking up this project, we resumed the work from Nashri end of the tunnel, gradually managed to conquer all the local issues and revived the most imperative project of India.

Etching a record of accomplishing the allocated half portion of the tunnel in less than two years, BCC soon flourished as the only construction company of J&K capable of constructing such magnificent twin-tube tunnels at an elevation of such high altitude. It was overwhelming when Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the Chenani-Nashri project and lauded our efforts hinting that while misguided youngsters were pelting stones, we were using the same stones to build incredible infrastructure.
Kindly walk us through your ongoing construction projects at BCC.
With thoughts of foraying into the road projects, we happily accepted the opportunity of constructing the 44-km stretch highway of Amravati-Chikhli project connecting Nagpur and Surat from IL&FS and completed up to 27 percent of it during the first year of allocation itself. Recalling our unparalleled work in the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel, IL&FS also awarded us the construction of Zoji La Tunnel at an altitude of 5500 m above the sea level, which holds a current worth of around Rs.5000 crores. Apart from this, we have also completed 400+ metres of tunnelling for Tunnel T77D, one of the most challenging projects of IRCON International Limited.

Could you please delineate on your fleet of equipment deployed at BCC and also on how you align yourselves with the market trends?
Recently, we imported the latest roadheader for T77D Tunnel which will be deployed for the first time in railway tunnel construction at J&K from the first week of December, 2018. In total, we have almost 230 equipment at BCC including single-boom hydraulic jumbo drilling machines, drilling jumbos, hi-tech concrete spraying machines, regular excavators, long-hole drill and many more upgraded machines (with maximum four years of service life).

Besides investing volumes in procuring the state-of-the-art equipment for construction, we meticulously train our staff every year on the latest market trends, update ourselves in accordance with the clients' requirements and attend multiple construction expos and events. In fact, we were a participant in the recent World Tunnel Congress 2018, Dubai. With visions of procuring more projects in the future, we are aligning ourselves to embark onto the hydro sector in construction.
