A career shaped by service across public health systems, defence medical establishments, and industrial healthcare reflects Dr Atul Kumar Chauhan’s deep commitment to medicine in its many forms.

Experience gained in primary health centres, field postings, and large organizational environments provided him with a strong foundation for building preventive, responsive, and people-centric health systems at scale. This broad professional journey defines the work and leadership approach of Dr Atul who currently is the Chief Medical Officer at Lumax DK Jain Group.

Dr Atul forayed into the medical field by earning a degree from University College of Medical Sciences, University of Delhi and graduated with MBBS in 1998.

He has worked for over 25 years across a broad range of healthcare settings across India, including Border Security Force in Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh Health Services, Delhi State Health Services, and Mobile Health Services for underprivileged communities.

He then shifted to occupational healthcare leadership after pursuing a Fellowship in Industrial Health and worked in top positions at Hero MotoCorp, before joining the Lumax Group in 2017.

Dr Atul currently heads the Occupational Health Services and Employee Benefits Policies at Lumax DK Jain Group, which is one of the top Indian automotive compo -nents conglomerates.

Formed in 1945, the company currently operates across 42 manufacturing plants and employs more than 15,000 people. His current role sees him concentrate on preventive care, emergency preparedness, compliance and employee benefit plans.

The combination of clinical discipline, operational pre- paredness, and strategic vision in health at work is a rare find in the respective field. We bring you an insightful discussion with Dr Atul, as he reflects on his career journey and the leadership principles that shaped his success.

What do you believe is the biggest mistake organi- zations make when designing workplace health programs?

The biggest mistake organizations make is viewing workplace health programs primarily as a compliance
obligation rather than a core business and people strategy. Often, insufficient focus is given to accessibility, infrastructure, trained medical manpower, emergency preparedness, and preventive healthcare.

An effective program should integrate robust on-site medical facilities, timely emergency response systems, role-specific periodic health checkups, and mandatory pre-employment screening.

When preventive and curative health measures are strategically aligned with legal requirements and organizational objectives, they not only ensure compliance but also enhance workforce wellbeing, productivity, and long-term sustainability.

I am working toward a future where communi -cation is recognized as a strategic leadership capability, not just a support function

Which emerging workplace health issues should employers proactively pre-pare for?

One of the most critical emerging work place health issues is stress and its related impact on mental and physical health, including cardiac risks, reduced productivity, and work–life imbalance.

Employers should proactively address this by creating a supportive work environment through stress-reduction initiatives such as on-site wellness programs, fitness activities, behavioural and professional training, interactive sessions, and team-based engagement programs. These measures help build cohesion, reduce burnout, and enable employees to perform at their best.

What role does technology play in modern healthcare, and how do you ensure it supports rather than replaces, clinical judgment?

Technology, especially AI, plays a vital role in modern healthcare by enabling comprehensive data analysis, early risk identification, and preventive health planning.

Through AI-driven assessment of health check-up reports, we are able to identify disease trends, risk factors, and areas requiring intervention at individual, managerial, and organizational levels. However, clinical judgment remains fundamental, as diagnosis and treatment are led by qualified clinicians.

Technology is used strictly as a support system to enhance decision-making, refine preventive programs and improve execution, ensuring that medical expertise remains central while outcomes become more proactive and effective.

What guidelines or metho- dologies do you follow to effectively lead your team?

Over my 26 years of service, I have progressed from a grassroots role to leading a diverse team of 26 members. My
leadership style is collaborative and inclusive, emphasizing open communication, alignment with organizational goals, and continuous improvement.

I ensure fairness, transparency, and timely corrective actions in line with organizational values, while guiding the team through best practices rather than directive control.

What future roadmap have you envisioned for yourself?

My future roadmap is to strengthen my contribution in the field of occupational health by building Lumax into a safe, healthy, and employee-centric organization.

With nearly 15,000 employees, my focus is on aligning health and safety initiatives with the company’s vision and goals, enabling employees to perform at their best.

I aim to foster a workplace culture that instils pride among existing and prospective employees and supports their long-term growth and success.

What is a piece of advice you would like to pass on to the aspiring industry leaders?

My advice to aspiring industry leaders is to stay connected with global trends, continuously learn, and implement the best practices in your field.

As India is growing as a manufacturing hub, it’s crucial to ensure that our solutions are aligned with international standards, helping us compete globally.

By staying in sync with changing scenarios, we can contribute to India's global standing, ensuring our products meet global needs without restrictions or deficiencies.
