Dr. Praveen GRS

Head Of AI

As AI moves from an emerging technology to a core business capability, the role of a Head of AI has expanded well beyond technology experimentation.

Today, the position involves identifying meaningful business applications, building organisation-wide AI adoption, strengthening productivity and ensuring that innovation is supported by the right governance, processes and safeguards.

In safety critical industries the responsibility becomes even more significant, requiring leaders to balance technological possibilities with reliability, compliance, quality and real world impact.

It is within this evolving landscape that Dr. Praveen GRS, Head of AI, Innovation and Automation, ZF LIFETEC, brings a distinctive combination of AI expertise, innovation experience and cross-functional leadership.

Dr. Praveen's association with AI dates back to around 2000, when the technology was still relatively unfamiliar and its applications were limited. As a research assistant in an AI laboratory, he worked on research projects involving expert systems and developed solutions using C and C++, laying the foundation for a career that would continue to evolve alongside the technology itself.

While he subsequently explored different professional domains as the AI market developed, innovation remained a consistent thread throughout his journey.

At Hexagon, he began working on AI proof-of concepts while simultaneously pursuing his doctorate in AI and criminology. His subsequent experience with organisations working across AI and image processing further strengthened his understanding of the technology before leading him to ZF LIFETEC, where he now focuses on AI within the passive-safety domain.

For Dr. Praveen, however, AI transformation is not simply about introducing sophisti -cated technology. He believes its value lies in solving meaningful problems and improving productivity, efficiency and quality.
His vision extends from individual AI applications to embedding AI across everyday workflows, enabling employees to work more effectively.

By building awareness, encouraging adoption and helping teams understand where AI can create genuine business value, he is helping move organisations from conventional digital transformation towards a broader, more practical AI transformation.

How are you translating AI innovation into practical capabilities?

I see two areas where we can put our efforts: Externally focused AI applications that become part of automotive products, and internally focused applications that help employees work more effectively.

Since passive safety involves critical technologies such as airbags and seatbelts, integrating AI into these systems requires extensive research, validation and alignment with customers.

At present, our major focus is also on improving employee productivity. AI can accelerate activities such as quality checks, while AI agents and multi-agent platforms can help employees access relevant tools and knowledge. By enabling people to work faster, more efficiently, AI can ultimately strengthen quality, productivity and customer satisfaction.

How are you leveraging India's technology talent for AI and innovation?

India’s deep technology and talent provides a strong foundation for advancing capabilities in artificial intelligence, innovation and automation, while remaining closely connected to global requirements and priorities.

The real value, however, comes not from adopting technology for its own sake, but from applying it to meaningful challenges that improve efficiency, quality, engineering outcomes and business performance.

By combining India’s growing technological capabilities with global expertise, experience and requirements, we can create solutions that deliver measurable value and contribute to the broader strategic objectives of the organisation.
How do you identify AI initiatives that are ready to scale?

Scaling AI across an organisation is not a simple process. With thousands of employees across functions, the first step is to create awareness and train people on what AI is and what it is not. Adoption is equally important. Once employees start using tools such as Copilot, they develop a better understanding of their capabilities and can identify business problems where AI may help. We use both push and pull approaches, while also assessing whether AI is genuinely appropriate and whether a solution should be built or bought. These considerations form part of a broader AI strategy that we continuously review and improve.

What is your vision for AI at ZF LIFETEC?

There is significant scope to embed AI across the entire organisational ecosystem. While organisations have traditionally focused on digital transformation, I would rather focus on AI transformation - embedding AI into the day-to-day work and workflows of employees to make them productive. Our objective is to make AI meaningfully touch the work of every person in the organisation and help them become more efficient. Achieving this will require sustained adoption, responsible implementation and a clear focus on identifying opportunities where AI can create genuine value. That is the direction in which I see our AI journey progressing.
