The Maldives has transformed from a secluded island destination into one of the world’s most distinctive luxury tourism markets. As the industry continues to evolve through premium travel, aviation connectivity, technology, investment and sustainability, leadership within the sector increasingly demands an understanding of both commercial opportunity and human relationships. Mohamed Riyaz’s entrepreneurial journey reflects this evolution, having built businesses across tourism, aviation and investment while contributing to the broader Maldivian tourism ecosystem.

His experiences across different ventures have been uniquely different from one another, each offering valuable lessons in leadership and business. Riyaz believes that tourism is ultimately about people, relationships and experiences. While numbers provide the foundation for business decisions, he believes it is people who build sustainable businesses. This philosophy has remained central to his leadership approach as his responsibilities and entrepreneurial interests have expanded.

Over the years, these experiences have shaped a leadership style that combines decisiveness with responsibility. Riyaz believes in making decisions quickly when circumstances demand it, while understanding the consequences of every choice. He also places considerable emphasis on calculated risk taking, empowering people to perform and maintaining accountability. For him, effective leadership is not about controlling every aspect of a business, but about creating the right environment for people and organisations to grow.

One principle particularly defines his professional journey: “Always protect credibility.” Riyaz believes businesses inevitably experience both strong and difficult periods, but credibility and trust provide the foundation to navigate both. As the Maldives enters its next phase of tourism
growth, he sees significant potential across luxury travel, aviation, technology, investment and sustainable experiences. His journey reflects an ambition not merely to participate in this transformation, but to help shape a more connected, innovative and resilient future for Maldivian tourism.

Having built Inner Maldives and subsequently Lets Go Maldives, what have been the defining milestones of your entrepre -neurial journey, and how have they shaped your leadership approach?

The most defining phase of my entrepreneurial journey was building Lets Go Maldives from the ground up and transforming it into an internationally connected Maldivian company. The journey has taught me resilience, the importance of relationships, and the confidence to make decisions even when circumstances are uncertain.

Both successes and challenges have played an important role in shaping the leader I am today. I have learned to stay close to the business, trust the people around me, adapt quickly to changing circumstances, and continuously look for the next opportunity. For me, entrepreneurship has always been about learning, evolving and moving forward.

Over the years, my leadership style has evolved from being highly hands-on to focusing more on strategic direction, people and the bigger picture

How has your leadership philosophy evolved as your responsibilities have expanded across tourism, aviation, investment and industry associations?

Over the years, my leadership style has evolved from being highly hands-on to focusing more on strategic direction, people and the bigger picture. As my responsibilities expanded across tourism, aviation, investment and industry associations, I realised that every business and situation requires a different approach. Today, I believe strongly in empowering the right people, giving them ownership and making decisions at the right time. At the same time, I remain closely connected to what is happening on the ground. My role has increasingly become about creating opportunities, connecting people and industries, and building businesses that contribute
meaningfully to the wider Maldivian economy.

What strategic decisions have enabled Lets Go Maldives to evolve beyond its traditional DMC roots and how do you assess opportunities for further diversification?

Our approach has always been to build around what we understand deeply - the traveller, the destination and the partners who connect the two. Our expansion into aviation and related services therefore emerged as a natural extension of our existing capabilities rather than diversification simply for the sake of growth. When I evaluate a new opportunity, I consider whether we have a genuine competitive advantage, whether it strengthens our existing ecosystem and whether it can create long-term value. I believe sustainable growth requires a clear purpose. For me, becoming bigger is not the objective; building a stronger, more relevant and future-ready business is.

What are your priorities for the next chapter of Lets Go Maldives and your wider entrepreneurial journey in terms of sustain able growth international expansion and long-term value creation?

My priority is to combine our international growth ambitions with technology and artificial intelligence. A significant part of this future is Kamana AI, our Maldives AI Concierge, which we are currently testing on the Lets Go Maldives website. I believe AI will fundamentally change how travellers discover, plan and experience destinations, and we want Kamana to be at the forefront of that transformation for the Maldives. At the same time, our focus remains on building sustainable businesses, expanding our international reach and creating long-term value for the tourism ecosystem. My ambition is to keep evolving while ensuring that our growth contributes meaningfully to the Maldives.
