CEO & Managing Director

India is currently one of the epicenters of the global water and sanitation crisis. The lack of government planning, not-so-scientific industrialization, and an absence of effective waste management strategies are widely blamed for India's water crisis. Furthermore, the water scarcity in India is expected to soon explode, as the country's population is predicted to reach 1.6 billion by 2050. As a result it is also expected to become a major source of domesticpolitical conflict in the future, not just in India, but the world over.

After growing up in a place where water scarcity was one of the potential hazards to human life, Pankaj Kumar(CEO & MD, SCALEBAN Equipment)was inspired to begin his professional career in the field of water conservation. Pankaj developed a patented, sustainable technology to reuse wastewater directly in cooling towers in place of fresh water across various industries without implementing costly conventional technologies such as Waste water RO and Multi Effect Evaporator (MEE), which require a lot of power and steam to operate and produce a lot of CO2, which indeed is also a global concern. In an exclusive interview with CEO Insights, Pankaj spoke about his journey as an entrepreneur and the vision behind establishing SCALEBAN Equipment.

How would you describe SCALEBAN Equipment as a reputable brand and its market position?
We have never thought of SCALEBAN as a brand rather, we've always seen it as a savior of the most valuable natural resources such as water and energy, and as a result, we've been recognized by firms such as Aditya Birla Group, IRPL, UPL, Biocon, Dr. Reddy, Sun Pharma, DMCC, and others. We are
working hard and honestly towards saving the entire human race and Mother Earth from a pandemic of water scarcity.

It gives me tremendous pleasure as an innovator and entrepreneur that 'we save millions of cu. m. of water every year

You have spent a lot of time managing and operating SCALEBAN Equipment. What is your secret to success, and how did you make it to this level?
Total commitment is one of my success mantras. We are convinced that if you do something good for our environment and society you will be successful.

How do you align strategies with the company's overall goals as the MD and CEO of SCALEBAN Equipment?
We have enormous plans to make a name for ourselves on a global scale, also we are doing well in India and have already established ourselves in Thailand and Malaysia. We will soon have a presence on every continent to save our natural resources. Our crew is extremely dedicated, and they are constantly there to help me reach our common objective of implementing our patented technology in a variety of businesses throughout the world.

How have you addressed the challenges posed by the COVID affected market, as well as the necessity for fresh strategies?
We performed well in India throughout the pandemic, but our foreign plans were hampered by travel restrictions. Hope fully, things will start to improve shortly. We intend to open our own offices in many countries to maintain a local presence and avoid such outcomes as a result of unforeseen circumstances.

In your professional journey so far, which are the milestones that bestowed you with utmost satisfaction both as an individual and as an entrepreneur?
SCALEBAN was recently recognized by one of the world's largest US-based publishers ‘Wiley Blackwell’, as the finest Sustainable Wastewater Solution Provider in the world. It gives me tremendous pleasure as an innovator and entrepreneur to have completed my first overseas project for the Aditya Birla Group in Thailand. It was a difficult task for me to use their 400 m3/da process wastewater in their primary process plant cooling tower with a three percent sodium sulfate solution without impacting plant performance. To meet their pollution standards in Thailand, the client planned to use a pricey traditional technology called a MultiEffect Evaporator (MEE). I am glad to state that this plant is an example of a client achieving ZLD goals by utilizing SCALEBAN technology which operates without the use of electricity or steam. SCALEBAN also does not require any additional area for installation because it is an online device.

What are the changes in market behavior that you expect to see in the future, and what possibilities do you perceive?
The increasing need for water will be exacerbated by the world's rising industrialization. In addition, all enterprises must limit their water usage by recycling their wastewater within the plant according to pollution control board regulations. All existing conventional technologies are extremely expensive in terms of CAPEX and OPEX not to mention operational issues, whereas SCALEBAN has a 70 percent lower CAPEX and operating cost than conventional technologies. We are positive and we see tremendous prospects all across the world.
