Pavan Kantharaj
Director
Pavan’s journey from Columbia to the world of business highlights his unique combination of education and experience. During his time at Columbia University, Pavan had the opportunity to intern on the LaGuardia Airport Project, where he gained hands-on experience in diverse aspects of construction, from civil works to structural steel. His decision to work on an airport project instead of a typical office building in Manhattan was a significant turning point in his career, providing him with a comprehensive under standing of large-scale infrastructure projects.
Coming from a business family, Pavan was always inclined to explore new technologies and innovative business management strategies. His time in the U.S. exposed him to a network of exceptional professionals who influenced his approach to business and leadership. Upon returning to Bengaluru, Pavan joined his father and brother in their family business, taking it to new heights with the insights and experience he gained abroad. Today, Pavan continues to lead Surya Habitech with a vision to drive innovation and sustainable growth in the industry. Let’s read on.
What were the most valuable aspects of your education at Columbia University that have had a lasting impact on your career?
At Columbia, I was fortunate to meet some of New York City’s construction leaders right in the
classroom. The guest speakers, who were experienced professionals, provided invaluable real-world insights that helped us anticipate challenges before they arose. Their deep knowledge taught us how to approach problems and what strategies to implement. We had the chance to interact with architects, engineers, managers, and CEOs, which gave me a well-rounded perspective on construction management.
Additionally, being part of Columbia’s Centre for Building Infrastructure and Public Spaces allowed me to delve into research addressing NYC’s public housing crisis. As part of this, we visited cities like Los Angeles and London to compare strategies and find solutions applicable to New York. This experience opened my eyes to how interconnected global challenges truly are and how solutions can be drawn from different corners of the world.
How have the skills you gained helped you manage challenges and setbacks in your professional life?
The skills I developed while working on three multi billion-dollar mega projects have been invaluable in helping me navigate challenges and setbacks in my career. These experiences taught me how to adapt, troubleshoot, and find effective solutions when issues arise. Collaborating with diverse stakeholders such as clients, contractors, and government agencies highlighted the critical role of clear communication in keeping projects on track. My time working in New York also honed my ability to stand my ground, think on my feet, and negotiate successfully in high pressure situations.
Who are your role models or mentors from the university, and what lessons have you learned from them?
One of my key mentors was Mohammad Mualla, who guided me throughout my journey. What stood out to me the most was his remarkable people skills and his ability to explain complex issues in a simple, clear way. Another important role model for me is Dr Feniosky Peña-Mora. His exceptional analytical skills left a lasting impression on me, and the feedback he provided during our research reviews was instrumental in improving our work. Beyond his professional accomplishments in construction, education, and public service, I deeply admire the kindness, humility, and respect with which he treats his colleagues and
