Adani Green to Develop Storage Project in Andhra Pradesh

According to reports, the Andhra Pradesh government has sanctioned the assignment of the 2,250 MW Gandikota-2 Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in YSR Kadapa district to Adani Hydro Energy Eleven Ltd, a subsidiary of the Adani Group.
The approval came after the State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB), led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, granted clearance.

The initiative will take place at the Lord Balaji Donthi Kona PSP Park as part of the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024. The state government has established a deadline of 72 months for completing the project.
The government has approved 29.20 million cubic metres (MCM) of water from the Gandikota reservoir for the project’s initial one-time filling. An extra 2.20 MCM annually has been sanctioned to cover evaporation losses, in accordance with current regulations.

Pumped storage systems are utilized to save electricity produced during times of low demand and deliver it when demand increases. The system operates by transferring water between reservoirs situated at varying heights. India has been boosting investments in pumped storage initiatives while also enhancing solar and wind energy capacity.
Based on government data, Andhra Pradesh has become one of the states with an increasing number of pumped storage projects in the planning and development stages. Multiple initiatives are being undertaken within the state's clean energy policy framework.
The Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024 of Andhra Pradesh seeks to draw investments amounting to nearly Rs.10 trillion and create jobs for about 7.5 lakh individuals in the clean energy industry.
The Adani Group is expanding its renewable energy portfolio by incorporating pumped storage projects in states such as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh. The state administration stated that the Gandikota-2 initiative is anticipated to assist industries such as manufacturing, electric mobility, green hydrogen, and data centers. With the endorsement of the Gandikota-2 PSP, Andhra Pradesh persists in expanding significant energy storage initiatives associated with renewable energy advancement.
Adani Green Energy is synchronizing all capacity expansion strategies with its objective of reaching 50 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, stated Executive Director Sagar Adani. The firm presently boasts an installed capacity of approximately 20 GW and is expanding rapidly through a roster of major projects.

He emphasized that Gautam Adani has pledged $100 billion for India’s energy transition, making it one of the largest private-sector investments in clean energy globally. An important initiative features the 30 GW renewable energy park in Khavda, Gujarat, which is anticipated to become the largest facility of its kind at a single site globally.
In addition to renewables, the group is putting money into transmission networks and various energy sources to enhance the entire energy ecosystem. Sagar Adani attributed the remarkable renewable capacity growth in India to stable government policy support, while highlighting that geopolitical risks like disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are being handled well without affecting consumers.
