Anthropic, the AI firm responsible for Claude, is suggesting to allocate a share of its ownership for public good, establishing a system by which its increasing corporate value might support efforts to tackle the social and economic impacts of AI.

On October 18, Anthropic announced it would allocate 5% of its shares to a newly formed Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, pending stockholder approval.

The company has also suggested a framework where the fund may obtain an extra 2% of its shares for every 50% rise in Anthropic's valuation exceeding a to-be-determined baseline, subject to the board's approval.

The decision arises as the AI sector confronts increasing inquiries regarding the distribution of economic benefits from more advanced AI systems, especially if automation impacts jobs and current income sources.

Anthropic states that the fund will provide enhanced flexibility to back public-interest efforts, such as substantial contributions to non-profit organizations and possible direct payments to certain communities.

Nonetheless, the firm has not yet revealed the fund's specific governance structures, eligibility requirements, or the schedule for distributing funds.

In contrast to a traditional charitable contribution derived from a company's yearly profits, the suggested setup links the fund directly to ownership in Anthropic. As the company expands, the shares may gain value, possibly enhancing the financial resources for programs benefiting the public.

Anthropic intends to create the fund as a fully owned limited liability company (LLC) instead of a typical non-profit entity registered under Section 501(c)(3) of the US tax code.

The company states that this framework would offer enhanced flexibility to accommodate various approaches for delivering assistance, such as donations to acknowledged non-profits and direct help to specific groups.

Anthropic has affirmed that the fund's equity will be used neither for political contributions nor for lobbying, in the U.S. or abroad.
