Chip equipment manufacturer ASML opens a technical academy in Phoenix to educate engineers in servicing the complicated chipmaking machines of the Dutch firm.

Situated just minutes from the Phoenix airport, the facility aims to train over 1,000 engineers annually to maintain and repair ASML's chip production equipment.

ASML chose to establish the academy due to the substantial rise in advanced chip production in the United States. Intel and Taiwan's TSMC have revealed major expansions in the Phoenix area, while Samsung is enlarging its factory close to Austin, Texas. Memory producer Micron is planning a multibillion-dollar expansion in the United States.

According to Vice President Clayton Patch, ASML's deep ultraviolet (DUV) and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) machines for producing advanced chips are complex devices that demand a service level comparable to that of contemporary military aircraft like the F-35.

The most sophisticated EUV machines are priced at around $400 million, and transporting them from ASML's factory in the Netherlands requires multiple 747 flights.

According to Patch, ideal candidates for service positions are frequently former military personnel who served in the US Navy or Air Force on fighter jets.

"Patch mentioned that they're excellent recruits transitioning from the military." "We adore those applicants."

According to Patch, the training center will be the first to function in the U.S. after approximately 20 years. In the past, engineers needed to go to Asia or Europe to acquire knowledge on servicing the chip manufacturing equipment. ASML's site features 14 classrooms and a cleanroom.

To satisfy the need for skilled engineers, Patch mentioned that the facility can function around the clock, every day of the week. The organization anticipates ultimately training 2,000 individuals annually.

The center, where engineers are currently attending classes, will educate ASML employees, but other firms that run fabs, or chip manufacturing plants, can also compensate ASML to instruct their engineers.

ASML requires three to six months to train engineers for basic maintenance tasks. Training for more advanced repair tasks may require additional time.
