As stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Germany ranks among India's most important partners in Europe. March 2021 marked 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have engaged in regular discussions, both in bilateral contexts and during significant international summits. Specifically, they have convened six times over the past two years.

Their most recent meeting occurred during the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy in June 2024, where they evaluated their ongoing collaborative efforts. Before that, the leaders met at the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023 and during the G7 Summit in Hiroshima in May 2023. Chancellor Scholz also made a significant standalone State visit to India in February 2023, marking the first visit by a German Chancellor since the commencement of the Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) format.
