Essar Group to Invest $15 Billion in Largest US Steel Plant in Iowa
In one of the largest international investments, India's Essar Group intends to allocate $18 billion in the United States, which includes a $15 billion steel facility in Iowa.
US President Donald Trump revealed the Iowa project during an Oval Office event attended by the Ruia family members, who own the conglomerate.
Essar's American subsidiary Mesabi Metallics will establish the facility, anticipated to be a component of a unified steel supply chain in the United States, utilizing iron ore sourced from the company’s activities in Minnesota. Trump described it as the "largest steel plant in American history," presenting it as an economic achievement in a crucial battleground state where Republicans confront challenging midterm elections.
"Today we are excited to reveal that Mesabi Metallics will construct the largest steel factory in American history in the wonderful state of Iowa." "It's the biggest plant, one of the biggest plants globally, but it's easily the largest plant in America," the US president stated to reporters.
The facility, anticipated to start operations in 2030, is expected to generate 10 million tonnes of steel each year once completely constructed. The White House announced that the full steel manufacturing process will occur within the United States.

Trump stated that the U.S. steel industry is "making a strong comeback," attributing this to the 50 percent tariffs on steel imports that he enacted last year. "Trump stated that everyone is establishing their factories here to avoid paying tariffs." "It's truly not so difficult."

Mesabi Metallics Chairman Rewant Ruia expressed gratitude towards the Trump administration's emphasis on domestic manufacturing, thanking Trump "for reinstating the significance of constructing products in America."

The announcement emphasized Iowa's increased importance for Republicans and for Trump, who has committed to campaigning there in the upcoming weeks. Iowa Republicans, including two candidates, also attended the event.
