Facebook, Instagram Recover After Brief US Outage

Meta’s social media platforms Facebook and Instagram recovered after a brief outage disrupted services for thousands of users in the United States on Sunday, according to outage tracking website Downdetector.
The disruption began at around 8:55 p.m. ET, with reports of service issues rising sharply across both platforms. Facebook recorded more than 17,000 outage reports, while Instagram registered more than 5,000 reports, according to Downdetector, which tracks service disruptions using user-submitted reports and other sources.
The number of reported problems fell significantly by around 10 p.m. ET, indicating that Facebook and Instagram had largely returned to normal. Meta did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment regarding the disruption or its possible cause.
The outage affected users attempting to access Meta’s platforms, although the precise number of people impacted could not be determined. Downdetector figures represent reports submitted by users and do not necessarily correspond to the actual number of affected users.

The latest disruption adds to a series of service interruptions affecting Meta’s platforms. Facebook and Instagram experienced a similar outage in July, when Downdetector recorded as many as 4,808 reports of problems on Facebook and 2,829 reports on Instagram.
The latest incident also highlights the reliance of millions of users and businesses on Meta’s platforms for communication, content sharing and digital engagement.
