Assam Foundation Stone Laid for Adani Power’s 3,200 MW Project
The Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, laid the foundation stone for Adani Power Limited’s new 3,200 MW Ultra-Supercritical Thermal Power Plant situated in Chapar, Dhubri district.
This bold Rs.48,000-crore project is anticipated to create roughly 20,000 jobs during its building phase and about 5,000 once it is operational. The initiative seeks to improve Assam's total electricity generation capability.

The official event was attended by high-ranking state officials, industry executives, community leaders, and Jeet Adani, Director of the Adani Group. The Chapar facility will be included in a broader power investment projected at Rs.63,000 crore in Assam, with phases anticipated to commence by December 2030.
Total investment in the state is expected to surpass Rs.80,000 crore, as various projects move from planning to implementation, which could generate significant job opportunities and infrastructure advancements in the next three to four years.
The thermal power initiative is expected to aid local contractors, suppliers, transport companies, and service providers by incorporating them into the expanding vendor network linked to the Adani Group in Assam.
Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma remarks, "Assam is fast emerging as the region’s energy hub, with several mega energy projects in the pipeline. The 3,200 MW Chapar project is a proud outcome of the confidence generated by the Advantage Assam Investor Summit 2.0".
"With an investment of nearly ₹48,000 crore, this project will constitute one of the largest single investments made in Assam".
"Besides providing massive employment opportunities, the state will also benefit through increased economic activity and SGST revenues, enabling local industries to participate in the emerging ecosystem."
Jeet Adani further states, "Today marks the beginning of an important new chapter for Assam. Adani Power will invest ₹48,000 crore in this thermal plant, bringing reliable and affordable electricity to support homes, businesses, and industries. The project will also create jobs and open up opportunities for local contractors, suppliers, and businesses. We are proud to invest in Assam and be part of the state’s economic growth."

The facility will comprise four units, each capable of producing 800 MW, utilizing ultra-supercritical technology known for its high efficiency and contemporary environmental safety criteria. Upon finishing, it seeks to provide reliable and affordable electricity to satisfy the residential, commercial, and industrial needs of Assam, thus strengthening the state's energy infrastructure.
The larger power investment entails approximately Rs.15,000 crore designated for two Pumped Storage Plants (PSPs) with a total capacity of 2,700 MW, overseen by Adani Green Energy Limited. Moreover, Adani Energy Solutions Limited is engaged in executing smart metering initiatives to upgrade the electricity distribution framework in Assam.
The Adani Group has allocated funds for the aviation and cement industries in Assam, particularly with the operational launch of Terminal 2 at Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati on 22 February 2026, enhancing the state’s connectivity and industrial potential.

The Adani Foundation, the charitable wing of the Adani Group, has offered support to more than 8,000 families impacted by floods in Assam’s Sivasagar and Dhemaji districts, supplying essentials including food, medical supplies, and hygiene products. The foundation's programs include 19 villages near Guwahati, focusing on enhancing education, healthcare, employment opportunities, community infrastructure, and climate action efforts.
In October 2025, Adani Power won the bid for the 3,200 MW thermal plant and received the Letter of Award from the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited in November 2025. Adani Power is acknowledged as the leading private thermal power producer in India, boasting an installed capacity of 18,290 MW in various states, thus significantly contributing to India's shift toward becoming a power-surplus country.
