Nepal, India Hold Talks on Trade, Energy and Flood Recovery
Nepal and India have conversed about enhancing their economic collaboration, focusing on post-flood rebuilding, trade, investment, energy, and connectivity as significant areas for cooperation.
The conversations occurred during a bilateral meeting in New Delhi on September 17, 2026, between Nepal’s Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle and India’s Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The gathering addressed a wide array of development collaboration topics and occurred as Nepal evaluates the economic repercussions of recent flooding and starts to plan for reconstruction and rehabilitation.
Wagle expressed gratitude to India for the help provided during the disaster, which included relief materials and technical aid for rescue and relief efforts, as per the Indian government's report on the meeting.
In addition to urgent recovery requirements, the two ministers talked about steps to enhance bilateral trade and investment while broadening economic collaboration. Connectivity was emphasized as a crucial aspect, with conversations centering on efforts that could promote increased trade, investment, and interpersonal exchanges between the two nations.

Collaboration on energy was another key aspect of the discussions. The conversations occur just after India consented to electricity exports of up to 654 MW to Nepal for 18 hours daily until December 31, 2026, due to damage inflicted on Nepal’s hydropower infrastructure by the floods.
The agreement highlights the significance of cross-border energy collaboration for both nations.

Wagle is visiting New Delhi for three days at the request of the Indian government. While visiting, he will meet with high-ranking Indian officials, business executives, and development policymakers as Nepal aims to progress its reconstruction goals and enhance economic collaboration with India.
