Foxconn intends to produce data center equipment alongside Japan's SoftBank at the Taiwanese company's old electric vehicle plant in Ohio, as part of the Stargate initiative to enhance U.S. artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Foxconn Chairman Young Liu informed reporters that Softbank has acquired the Lordstown site, noting that the site will remain operational through a partnership that the two companies will establish.

Earlier this month, Foxconn announced it had reached an agreement to sell the factory and its equipment for $375 million, but did not disclose the buyer's identity.

Stargate is a collaboration involving SoftBank, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and Oracle. U.S. President Donald Trump announced the project in January, stating that the firms would invest as much as $500 billion.

Foxconn chairman Young Liu stated that the two firms will form a joint venture, where Foxconn will manage the location while SoftBank will supply the essential manufacturing machinery.

Initially reported on August 5, Foxconn disposed of the 6.2 million sq ft (576,000 sqm) property in Lordstown, Ohio, for $375 million to a newly formed organization called ‘Crescent Dune LLC.’

At that time, Foxconn chose not to provide additional details about the buyer's identity, only confirming that it was a partner they already work with.

Liu stated that the foundation for the project was established over a year and a half ago. The location will be the inaugural manufacturing facility created as part of the $500 billion Stargate data center initiative, which SoftBank is collaborating on with OpenAI, Oracle, and Abu Dhabi's MGX.
