A judge in Washington ruled that Google does not need to sell its Chrome browser, marking a rare victory for Big Tech against U.S. antitrust regulators, while directing Google to share data with competitors to enhance competition in online search.

Shares of Alphabet, Google's parent company, rose 7.2 percent in after-hours trading as investors celebrated the judge's decision, which permits Google to continue making profitable payments to Apple that antitrust regulators claimed sidelined competitors in search. Apple stock increased by 3 percent.

U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta additionally decided that Google can retain its Android operating system, which, along with Chrome, supports Google's leading position in the online advertising market.

The decision stems from a five-year legal conflict involving one of the most lucrative companies globally and the U.S., where antitrust officials and legislators have consistently scrutinized Big Tech's market supremacy. Mehta determined last year that Google possesses an unlawful monopoly in online search and associated advertising.

However, the judge took on the task of imposing remedies on Google with “humility,” he noted, highlighting the competition generated by artificial intelligence firms since the case commenced.

“Here the court is requested to peer into a crystal ball and foresee what lies ahead.” "Not precisely a judge’s strength," Mehta noted.

Although exchanging data with competitors may enhance rivals to Google’s advertising sector, keeping Chrome and Android without selling them alleviates a significant worry for investors who consider them vital components of Google’s overall operations.
