Hyundai Recalls 51,587 US Vehicles Over Fire Risk

imgHyundai Motor is recalling 51,587 vehicles in the US after safety regulators warned that a defect in the trailer wiring system could increase the risk of fire.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall on Wednesday, saying the problem stems from a short circuit in the trailer lights that affects vehicles equipped with certain trailer wiring harnesses.

According to the NHTSA, the short circuit is caused by incorrect installation of the trailer wiring harness, which can lead to electrical faults even when the lights are not functioning.

This fault presents a potential fire risk both when vehicles are parked and when they are being driven, particularly if the trailer wiring harness becomes overheated.

In light of the safety concern, the NHTSA is urging owners of affected Hyundai vehicles to park their cars outdoors and away from buildings or other structures until the necessary repairs are completed.

The agency emphasized that this precaution should remain in place until dealers carry out the free remedy work.

Hyundai has said that dealers across the United States will replace the trailer wiring harness at no cost to vehicle owners once the recall service becomes available.

The replacement is intended to eliminate the faulty installation and reduce the risk of electrical shorting that could lead to a fire.

The recall adds to a broader pattern of safety actions in recent years related to electrical wiring and fire risks in vehicles.

Hyundai’s latest recall highlights ongoing concerns about electrical system safety in modern vehicles. According to industry filings, the issue is linked to how trailer wiring harnesses were installed, which can allow moisture and debris to accumulate and create a short circuit even when the trailer lights are not in use.

Electrical shorts of this kind are particularly dangerous because they can generate enough heat to ignite surrounding materials, posing a serious fire hazard whether the vehicle is parked or in motion.
