IBM to Pay $17 Million to Settle US Government Probe

IBM will pay $17 million to resolve a US government investigation into the company's diversity, equity, and inclusion practices, which were targeted by President Donald Trump's administration during his second term.
The agreement signifies the initial outcome from the US Department of Justice's unit established last year named the "Civil Rights Fraud Initiative" aimed at addressing DEI policies through a civil anti-fraud statute.
Trump has focused on both public and private entities—from governmental bodies to private colleges—regarding DEI initiatives that civil rights proponents argue aid in correcting historical injustices for marginalized communities such as women and ethnic minorities.
In a settlement reached between the DOJ and IBM, the US government alleged that IBM employed a "diversity modifier" that "linked bonus pay to meeting demographic goals," along with additional claims.
The settlement indicated that IBM ended or altered several programs and policies, though the company refuted any wrongdoing.

"This agreement does not imply any admission of liability by IBM nor a concession from the United States regarding the validity of its claims," stated the agreement.

The White House portrays DEI as being against merit and biased against groups such as white individuals and men. Trump has issued executive orders directing federal contractors and subcontractors to remove DEI.
Numerous US firms reduced or altered their diversity policies following Trump's directives.
