India on Track to Boost Green Energy, Says Hardeep Singh Puri

Petroleum and Natural Gas Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated that India is progressing toward substantially increasing its energy and industrial capabilities while moving forward with sustainability objectives.
During his address at KPMG ENRich 2025: Reimagining the Energy Enterprise in Times of Change and Uncertainty, Puri announced that India will establish 2,200 global capability centers by 2030. He mentioned that these centers will produce 2.8 million employment opportunities and yield more than $100 million in revenue.
When discussing the government's achievements in ethanol blending, the minister observed that the 20 percent ethanol blending goal was reached six years ahead of schedule. He added that they are now incorporating the existing ethanol blending developments and preparing for future initiatives.

Regarding green hydrogen, Puri showed confidence about India reaching cost competitiveness, stating his assurance that the country will succeed in reducing green hydrogen prices to under $3 per kilogram.
The minister commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi, noting that he has shown how to leverage current global political instability for India's benefit. He declared that India will surpass Germany's growth rate within the coming months.
Puri also highlighted India’s record on biofuels. “We had 1.4per cent bio-fuel blending in 2014. We had a 10 percent target by November 2022; we did that five months in advance. We have a current target of 20 percent, the target date was 2030, we’ve done it six years in advance,” he said.
On green hydrogen, he noted rapid cost reductions. “When I started, I was told the price should be about USD 5.5 per kilo. IOCL floated a tender… below USD 4. NTPC floated another… around USD 3.50 or below. I am very sure… once it comes to USD 2.5 per kilogramme… You will see the massive shift,” he said.

The minister reiterated that while India is driving clean energy initiatives, ensuring supply remains the top priority. “The first thing that my prime minister has to do is to make sure no matter what the weather conditions are, there is no shortage of energy in any part of the country,” Puri said.
He highlighted progress in next-generation ethanol, compressed biogas, and bamboo-derived ethanol processing facilities, along with India's expanding refining and petrochemical capabilities.
Puri stated that India has successfully achieved its climate objectives and will maintain its role in influencing the worldwide energy transformation.
“By 2030, which is what we are calling our vision, we are going to see a complete re-shape with India being at the centre of it, and the GCC being at the centre of that massive re-imagination of the energy enterprise,” he said.
