India intends to acquire the US-made Javelin anti-tank missile system, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Friday, signaling further strengthening of defense ties between the two countries.

“MAJOR announcement! India intends to acquire the proven Javelin anti-tank system,” Gor said in a post on X.

The proposed acquisition comes as India and the United States continue to expand defense cooperation across multiple areas.

Washington said in July that the two countries were also strengthening collaboration in civil nuclear energy, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies.

The Javelin is a portable anti-tank missile system jointly developed by Lockheed Martin and RTX. Designed to engage armored vehicles, the system has been widely used by US and allied forces.

Gor said the potential acquisition could also create opportunities for co-production between India and the US. He added that defense ties between the two countries have reached “record high levels.”

The development builds on India's growing procurement of US defense equipment. In November 2025, the US State Department approved a possible $93 million sale to India covering up to 100 Javelin systems and 216 Excalibur precision-guided artillery shells.

India already operates Excalibur rounds with its M777 howitzers.

The two countries established a framework for a major defense partnership last year, aimed at improving interoperability across land, sea, air, space, and cyberspace.

India has also acquired several US-origin defense platforms, including Apache and Chinook helicopters, C-17 and C-130J transport aircraft, P-8I maritime surveillance aircraft, and M777 artillery systems.

Gor also referred to comments by US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth at the May 2026 Shangri-La Dialogue, saying the latest development would further strengthen the strategic defense relationship between India and the United States.
