NTPC Aims 244 GW Power Capacity, Energy Value Chain Investment

NTPC aims to almost triple its power generation capacity to 244 GW by 2037, focusing on renewable energy and nuclear power as part of an extensive investment strategy covering generation, storage, and fuel security, stated chairman and managing director Gurdeep Singh during the annual general meeting.
NTPC intends to invest approximately Rs.16.86 lakh crore in total by FY37 across thermal, hydro, pumped storage, renewable energy, battery storage, mining, and nuclear power sectors.

Singh stated that the investment plan would be paired with fiscal responsibility, as the company aims to balance growth, leverage, returns, and distributions to shareholders.
"The next decade will be one of the most significant periods of growth in NTPC's history. We believe the future power system will need three things simultaneously: scale, flexibility and reliability," Singh says.
"NTPC is uniquely positioned to bring these three elements together."
Nuclear energy will play a crucial role in the organization’s growth strategy. NTPC plans to add approximately 30 GW of nuclear capacity to the national goal via its fully owned subsidiary NTPC Parmanu Urja Nigam and its joint venture Anushakti Vidhyut Nigam alongside the Nuclear Power Corporation of India.

The immediate nuclear emphasis encompasses the 2.8 GW Mahi Banswara initiative in Rajasthan, while evaluations and talks are in progress for another 34 locations across 13 states utilizing various technologies, stated the chairman.
Nuclear energy, he stated, would enhance renewable and thermal sources by delivering dependable, low-carbon electricity continuously. The firm is developing capabilities in battery energy storage systems and pumped storage initiatives as the growing incorporation of renewable energy heightens the necessity for flexibility within the power grid.
NTPC is investigating long-duration storage solutions, such as CO2 storage and redox flow batteries, potentially decreasing reliance on traditional critical minerals. Singh stated that NTPC's key focuses are finishing ongoing projects, speeding up the growth of renewable energy and storage, enhancing fuel security, extending nuclear operations, and boosting the efficiency and adaptability of its thermal fleet.
