India Pushes Public-Private Collaboration in Data Infrastructure
The expansion of data centres in India should not compromise environmental sustainability or lead to high water consumption, as the government aims to enhance green energy and advocate technologies that minimize water use while digital infrastructure grows nationwide, stated Jitin Prasada, Minister of State in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Electronics and Information Technology.
During the inauguration of Microsoft’s newest data center infrastructure, Prasada stated that the government aimed for the expansion of data centers to be paired with actions to mitigate their environmental impact. He indicated the rising adoption of technologies that enable water to be circulated in closed systems and mentioned that India was also boosting green energy generation.
Prasada recommended that data center firms should focus on placing their facilities nearer to power sources instead of water, as India aims to develop the infrastructure required to facilitate the expansion of artificial intelligence and various digital services.

He mentioned that India possesses the land, talent, and other necessary elements to emerge as a key location for data center investments, while the government is striving to create a smoother environment for companies to set up operations.

Simultaneously, Prasada encouraged tech firms to broaden their infrastructure presence beyond the southern and western regions of the nation.
“Krishnan mentioned that you need to traverse the entire spectrum of our nation to guarantee a presence in all areas,” Prasada stated, referencing MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan’s prior comments.
Prasada stated that every region of the nation must hold equal significance as India develops essential digital infrastructure.

The minister characterized data centers as essential infrastructure due to their function in safeguarding citizens' information and aiding vital infrastructure in the nation. He mentioned that the government was eager to collaborate with private firms as India builds this ecosystem.
