Starbucks to Set Up its First India GCC in Chennai
Starbucks is broadening its presence in India beyond cafes, with Chennai preparing to feature a technology center that will aid its worldwide operations.
The Tamil Nadu government stated that the US coffee chain's inaugural global capability center (GCC) in India is projected to generate approximately 800 technology positions.
Starbucks and the Tamil Nadu government entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the initiative, witnessed by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. This will mark Starbucks’ first GCC in India and will operate independently from its retail collaboration with Tata Consumer Products. Starbucks runs approximately 500 locations in India via the joint venture.

The facility in Chennai will assist the company's technological and worldwide business needs. GCCs have become a crucial aspect of the technology functions of international firms, with centres in India more frequently managing areas like software, finance, product development, and research.
The news arrived soon after Walgreens declared it would set up its initial GCC in India, located in Chennai. The healthcare and pharmacy firm in the US plans to generate over 250 positions within the initial year. Chennai has become a hub for technology and support functions for firms like Citi, Barclays, and American Express.
Starbucks' decision occurs as Tamil Nadu aims to draw more international firms to establish technology and business operations in the region. Anand Varadarajan, Starbucks' chief technology officer, stated that the company regards India as a significant market for its tech operations.

He highlighted Chennai’s technology expertise, infrastructure, and employee retention as reasons for the choice.
He mentioned that the incentives provided by the Tamil Nadu government would aid the company’s initiatives.
The Chennai center will join Starbucks' broader technology and corporate support framework. The corporation maintains its international headquarters in Seattle, Washington, where it still accommodates technology and various corporate operations. Starbucks is expanding its corporate presence in Nashville, Tennessee. In April, the company announced it would invest $100 million in the city and employ up to 2,000 people there within the next five years.
The operation in Nashville encompasses technology and supply chain teams, as well as various corporate functions. Starbucks is relocating certain positions from Seattle to Nashville as a part of its growth.

The technology teams of the company operate in various domains, such as engineering, digital products, enterprise technology, artificial intelligence, infrastructure, and supply chain technology. Starbucks' job openings now display tech roles available in Seattle and Nashville.
The Chennai GCC will establish an India-based tech center within this network, providing Starbucks with access to India's vast talent of technology experts and aiding its global operations.
