Indigo Appoints Willie Walsh as its New Chief Executive Officer

IndiGo, the leading airline in India holding around 65 percent of the nation's domestic aviation market, has made the most significant leadership choice in Indian aviation since the liberalization of commercial aviation, appointing Willie Walsh.
He is the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and ex-Chief Executive of British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG), as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Walsh will take on the position by August 2026, succeeding co-founder Rahul Bhatia, who has been filling in temporarily after the sudden exit of departing CEO Pieter Elbers.
The appointment comes at a critical, challenging time for IndiGo. In December 2025, the airline faced its most challenging operational period as over 4,500 flights were cancelled due to violations of pilot rest regulations—an incident that led to a formal censure from India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) against the executive team and resulted in Elbers' exit.
Walsh's arrival is clearly positioned as a realignment: the hiring of a global aviation leader to rebuild regulatory confidence, operational rigor, and strategic unity.

Walsh started his journey as an Aer Lingus pilot in 1979, advancing through management levels to attain the position of Chief Executive in 2001. He led the airline's shift from a financially struggling national carrier to a viable, restructured airline—a strategy that would shape his future leadership approach.
Walsh assumed leadership of British Airways in 2005, guiding the airline through the 2008 worldwide financial crisis with bold cost restructuring and enhanced operational efficiency initiatives. His most significant accomplishment at BA: orchestrating the merger with Spain's Iberia to form International Airlines Group (IAG).

As the founding CEO of IAG, Walsh created one of the most lucrative airline holding companies globally, incorporating Vueling, Aer Lingus (again, at the holding level), and LEVEL into the portfolio while ensuring BA's profitability amid various external challenges.
