IT Ministry Takes Over Device Safety Talks

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has assumed responsibility for deliberations on safety guidelines pertaining to mobile phones and various communication devices.
Reports indicate that this transfer of accountability from the Department of Telecommunications is in alignment with the necessity to adhere to the regulatory mandates established within a telecommunications security assurance framework.

Industry participants, on the other hand, characterized the advancement as a regular exchange of information between the government and producers.
According to reports, the Ministry of Information Technology is in discussion with various parties as part of the Indian Telecom Security Assurance Requirements. This framework was established by the National Centre for Communication Security within the Department of Telecommunications.
The ITSAR framework encompasses a wide range of safety and security protocols for telecommunication network equipment, addressing issues such as software updates and access to the source code in communication devices. In the past, the Department of Telecommunications engaged in discussions with mobile phone corporations regarding safety regulations.
This task has since been transferred to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in relation to communication devices, as per the authorization provided within the ITSAR framework.

Reports claim that Meity has been authorized to address safety concerns related to mobile phones in accordance with established guidelines. Industry consultations are currently underway and progressing smoothly. The consultation process is in its early stages, and the government has not yet mandated or actively promoted any specific directives in this regard. Officials stated that Meity has engaged in multiple discussions with mobile phone manufacturers and various industry stakeholders regarding safety standards.
The India Cellular and Electronics Association, which includes major companies such as Apple, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Dixon, has indicated that discussions surrounding safety standards have been in progress for a significant period of time, with numerous rounds of consultation taking place.

The organization asserted that it is customary for the government to collaborate with the industry on technical and compliance matters, with manufacturers incorporating global standards and real-world considerations into their responses. Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of ICEA, emphasized that these discussions are conducted through a transparent and inclusive consultation process, and the industry expresses contentment with the ongoing dialogue, noting no pressing worries at present.
